The European Commission has criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s push for a 50% tariff on EU goods, urging the U.S. to approach trade talks with respect rather than threats. Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that he is recommending the tariff starting June 1, claiming negotiations with the EU are stalled. He later stated that the tariff is already the “deal.”
EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to fair negotiations and warned the bloc would defend its interests. The announcement caused financial market disruptions, with stock indices dropping and the euro weakening.
Polish and Dutch officials suggested Trump’s move may be a negotiation tactic, emphasizing that talks are ongoing and may continue until early July. The EU currently faces existing U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars, and other goods, with some rates expected to double after a 90-day pause ends on July 8.
