The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially adopted a new Pandemic Agreement after more than three years of negotiations, aiming to enhance global readiness for future health crises. Celebrated as a win for public health and science, the agreement introduces a “One Health” approach, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health to better detect and prevent disease outbreaks.
A key feature is the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) system, enabling rapid sharing of pathogen data and genomic sequences to support faster development of treatments and vaccines. The agreement also stresses continuous investment in research and development, ensuring that essential infrastructure and resources remain ready between pandemics.
To improve global health equity, the agreement supports expanding manufacturing capacity in low- and middle-income countries and encourages voluntary technology transfers to enhance vaccine and drug production worldwide. While its effectiveness depends on strong implementation and political will, the agreement marks a significant step in global pandemic preparedness.
