Google has unveiled its most significant search engine overhaul in over a decade, introducing “AI Mode” to U.S. users. This new feature turns Google Search into a conversational assistant capable of handling complex queries, powered by its advanced Gemini 2.5 AI model. The announcement, made at Google’s developer conference, also included tools like “Deep Search” for research and Project Mariner, an AI agent for tasks like booking reservations.
The company also launched a premium “AI Ultra Plan” at $250 per month, offering experimental features and ad-free YouTube, reflecting the high costs of AI innovation, with Alphabet’s capital spending expected to reach $75 billion in 2025.
These changes are already reshaping how people use the internet. AI-generated summaries at the top of search results are reducing clickthrough rates to websites by nearly 30%, worrying online publishers who rely on traffic from Google.
