U.S. Senator Gary Peters criticized the Trump administration for spending an estimated $100,000 per day per detainee to house migrants at Guantanamo Bay, calling it wasteful compared to the $165 daily cost at U.S. detention centers. During a Senate hearing, Peters questioned why migrants were detained in Cuba only to be returned to the U.S. at taxpayer expense. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, defending a $44 billion budget increase request, said she was unaware of the Guantanamo costs. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit over the treatment of migrants at the base, citing poor conditions and human rights concerns. Even Republican Senator Rand Paul questioned the administration’s high spending on border security, including a proposed $46.5 billion for the border wall, despite a drop in illegal crossings.
