The 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) opened in Geneva under the theme “One World for Health.” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the significance of this year’s meeting, as member states may adopt a historic pandemic agreement. He also urged support for increased funding to ensure WHO’s financial stability.
China’s National Health Commission head, Lei Haichao, emphasized China’s contributions to global health, including dispatching 30,000 medical personnel and providing COVID-19 supplies. He reaffirmed support for the WHO and multilateralism and opposed Taiwan’s participation in the assembly, calling it interference in China’s internal affairs.
The assembly will focus on the pandemic agreement, sustainable financing, and about 75 health-related agenda items. The proposed WHO budget for 2026–2027 may be reduced to $4.267 billion. The assembly runs until May 27.
