Jessie, a 37-year-old freelancer in Beijing, lost 5.5 kg in a month as part of JD Health’s “Happy Weight-loss Challenge,” earning a 1,000 yuan ($138) reward. The program, held at 25 Beijing pharmacies, offered cash incentives to those who lost over 2.5 kg, drawing huge public interest.
Participants, like Jessie and 29-year-old engineer Ms. Liu, stressed health over appearance as their main motivation. However, some noted risks of rapid weight loss, like hypoglycemia.
This challenge is part of a growing trend in China, where communities and universities are offering weight-loss programs and promoting healthier food options. It aligns with the national “Weight Management Year” initiative, launched in 2024, to curb obesity through education and supportive environments.
China faces a major obesity crisis, with 402 million adults affected as of 2021. The National Health Commission warns the rate could hit 65.3% by 2030, costing over 418 billion yuan in healthcare.
Experts emphasize that healthy weight loss should involve balanced diets, regular exercise, and quality sleep. While medical options exist, they should be used under medical supervision.
