A report by Ember, a climate and energy independent think tank, reveals that wind and solar energy made up a record 12 % of global electricity generation in 2022, up from 10% in 2021. The growth in these renewable sources met 80% of the rise in global electricity demand, slowing the increase of CO2 emissions from the power sector. The report forecasts a decline of 0.3% in fossil fuel generation this year, followed by bigger falls in subsequent years as more wind and solar power comes online. The power sector needs to reach net-zero emissions by 2040, meaning wind and solar must reach 41% of global electricity by 2030.
