Disney has filed a lawsuit against Florida’s Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, accusing him of illegally using the state government to punish the company for exercising its right to free speech. The lawsuit comes after a controversial Florida bill, referred to as the “Don’t say gay” law, was signed into law by DeSantis. The law prohibits in-class discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity for kindergarten to third-grade students in Florida. In March, DeSantis signed a bill that gave control of Walt Disney World’s autonomous district in Orlando back to the state of Florida, which Disney is now challenging. Disney claims that the newly formed tourist board violated its contract rights, and the company’s lawsuit aims to protect its employees, developers, and visitors from “retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain State officials.”
