Wa people celebrate wooden drum festival Yunnan

People of the ethnic Wa group living in Ximeng Wa Autonomous County of Yunnan welcomed their highly anticipated, annual wooden drum festival on Monday. The festival includes a sacrificial ritual around a selected tree trunk, the carving of the wooden drum, singing and dancing and serves as an opportunity for young people to socialize. The wooden drum is considered a divine object used to communicate with the Wa gods and is now used as an instrument during festivals. Local authorities stage various activities to promote Wa culture, cuisine, handicrafts, religion and entertainment.
