The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called on the international community to take swift action on climate change by making deeper and faster cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. In his message for International Mother Earth Day, Guterres emphasized the need for the world to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by scaling up investments in adaptation and resilience. He urged countries to reflect on humanity’s relationship with the natural world and warned of the dire consequences of our actions on the environment. Guterres also stressed the importance of healthy ecosystems in the fight against climate change and called for efforts to protect 30% of Earth’s land and water by 2030. He urged governments, corporations, institutions, and civil society to lead the way in this fight and learn from the wisdom of Indigenous peoples.
