In observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to take action against racism and eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. Guterres emphasized that racial discrimination has been a destructive force throughout history, responsible for death and suffering on a massive scale, and continues to ruin lives and marginalize communities.
Guterres noted that despite increased global awareness of racism, some countries are experiencing a backlash against anti-racist policies and practices. The UN chief also emphasized the need to address racism in the digital age, where white supremacist influencers profit from racism on social media platforms and artificial intelligence algorithms amplify and digitize racial discrimination. Guterres called for a firm stand against these trends and the condemnation and elimination of racial discrimination in all its forms, including through legal channels.
