The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Amal spacecraft has sent back the most detailed photos of Deimos, Mar’s little moon. The spacecraft flew within 100 kilometers of the moon last month and captured images of the little explored for side of Deimos, as well as mars itself in some of the images. The photographs show that Deimos is not as asteroid captured by Mar’s orbit but instead of Martain origin, possibly from the bigger Martain moon or from Mars itself. The findings were presented at the European Geosciences Union’s General assembly in Vienna. Amal will continue to sweep past Deimos this year, but not as closely as the march 10 encounter.
