According to a recent commentary by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) state media KCNA, the recent trip made by Republic of Korea (ROK) President Yoon Suk Yeol to the United States was seen as the “most hostile, aggressive and provocative” and has raised concerns about the possibility of a nuclear war. The commentary came after Yoon and U.S. President Joe Biden signed the “Washington Declaration,” a pact that provides Seoul with detailed insights and a say in U.S. contingency planning to prevent and respond to any nuclear incidents in the region through a U.S.-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group.
The pact also involves the U.S. increasing joint military exercises with the ROK and expanding the deployment of its strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula. KCNA criticized these moves, stating that they “are making a nuclear war against the DPRK a fait accompli.” The commentary also noted that the level of hostility towards the DPRK during the Biden-Yoon talks was unprecedented, as they publicly designated the DPRK as a target for a nuclear attack.
KCNA went on to call Yoon a “puppet traitor,” accusing him of “turning South Korea into a U.S. arsenal,” and claimed that this would destabilize not only the Korean Peninsula but also the wider region.
