Lionel Messi added another achievement to his illustrious career as he scored over 100 goals for Argentina in a game against Curacao on Tuesday. The Argentine footballer scored a hat-trick, helping his team secure a 5-0 win during their international friendly match.
Messi joins the exclusive club of only two other footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Ali Daei of Iran, who have also scored over 100 international goals. The football star scored his 100th goal in the 20th minute, and by half-time, he had taken his tally to 102 goals.
In 2022, Messi led Argentina to World Cup victory, following in the footsteps of his predecessor and Brazil legend Pele. A statue of Messi now stands alongside those of other football greats at the South American federation’s museum.
At an unveiling ceremony at the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL) headquarters in Luque, Paraguay, Messi held a replica of the World Cup trophy and stood beside the life-size statue. The Argentine Football Federation renamed the national team’s training facility after Messi scored his 800th career goal in a friendly match against Panama on March 24, 2023.
Reflecting on his achievements, Messi said, “My dream was to enjoy what I liked when I was little, to be a professional soccer player, to do what I always loved in this life. I had a very long road, many decisions and defeats, but I always looked ahead and wanted to go for a triumph, for a victory. I think that is the most important thing, to fight for your dreams, that everything is possible and to enjoy the game, which is the most beautiful thing there is.”
