According to Iranian official news agency IRNA, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, said on Monday that the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia will positively impact regional peace, stability, and security. The Beijing-brokered agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to normalize ties has received “very positive reactions” in the region and internationally. Kanaani stated that the agreement will strengthen regional cooperation for peace and stability while boosting economic and trade relations between not only Iran and Saudi Arabia but also other regional countries. He also mentioned that Iran and Saudi Arabia will exchange ambassadors after the reopening of their diplomatic missions. In March 2022, China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran announced that the two countries had reached an agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and diplomatic missions within two months. This decision was taken after Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 due to the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, following the kingdom’s execution of a Shiite cleric.
