Germany’s environment minister criticized Japan’s plan to release treated nuclear-tainted water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean, following the conclusion of the G7 Minister’ Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment. At the meeting, Japanese Economy, Trade, and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said the progress, including the release of treated water into the ocean, “will be welcomed.”
However, Steffi Lemke, the German Minister for the Environment, said that “We cannot welcome the release of the treated water.” Japan plans to start the release in spring or summer. The G7 nations said in a joint communique that they support the International Atomic Energy Agency’s independent review to ensure the discharge of the treated water is conducted consistently with IAEA safety standards and international law.
