The European Union (EU) member states have agreed a ban the sale of new CO2-emitting cars by 2035, with a regulatory incentive for zero and low-emission vehicles (ZLEV) in pace from 2025 until the end of 2029.
The new rules aim to reduce emissions from road transport and encourage the automotive industry to shift towards zero-emissions. Germany had initially opposed the package, but a comprise was reached with the European Commission over the future use of e-fuels in cars, allowing for internal combustion engine cars to be sold after 2035 if they fill up exclusively with CO2-netural fuels.
