The US, UK, and Australia have announced a plan to provide Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines by the early 2030s. The deal involves the US selling three Virginia class nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, with an option to buy two more, and the development of a new submarine class called SSN-AUKUS, which will be built in the UK and Australia using cutting-edge US technologies. The move has been criticized by China as an act of nuclear proliferation and has upset France, which had a previous deal to supply conventional submarines to Australia cancelled. Some experts have also raised concerns about the deal setting a damaging precedent for non-nuclear-weapon states to remove nuclear material from the inspection system of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
