South Korea’s compensation plan to victims of forced labor by Japan draws huge backlash

Condemning the government’s plan to compensate victims of Japan’s forced wartime labor, protesters gathered outside the South Korean Foreign Ministry in Seoul on March 6.

The government proposed compensating 15 victims of forced labor through a domestic foundation instead of direct payment from two responsible Japanese Companies – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corp.

Protesters denounced the plan as a scheme that nullifies the previous Supreme Court order for the Japanese firms to compensate victims.
